In this week's parsha we read:

Moses said to the LORD, “See, You say to me, ‘Lead this people forward,’ but You have not made known to me whom You will send with me. Further, You have said, ‘I have singled you out by name, and you have, indeed, gained My favor.’ Now, if I have truly gained Your favor, pray let me know Your ways, that I may know You and continue in Your favor. Consider, too, that this nation is Your people.” And He said, “I will go in the lead and will lighten your burden.”

In other words, You, G-d, say You are our G-d and we should follow You, but we don't know what You want us to do!

The Holy One responds by revealing His Torah and His Thirteen essential Attributes. Before the giving of the Torah we had no way of knowing Him; with the Torah and the help of the Tzadikim we do.

And the LORD said to Moses: Write down these commandments [of the Written Torah], for in accordance with these commandments I make a covenant with you and with Israel.

This Week's Parsha and Haftara combine to prepare us for Pesach and Omer Count – that brings us to Shavuot – in order to call us to make Teshuvah. But what are we “repenting” from? This is often misunderstood, or perhaps better, under-understood. Real Teshuvah is a hammer that shatters Illusion.
